The Pros and Cons of Traditional Lawn Care Practic The Pros and Cons of Traditional Lawn Care Practices

Most traditional lawn care practices were born out of the suburban movement in America in the 50’s and early sixties. These traditional practices have evolved since then, but they still rely principally upon synthetic materials. Let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of this approach.

PROS:
Ease of application. This applies mainly to fertilizer. The spreadability of many synthetic fertilizers is superior to that of organic ones.
Lower cost per application of fertilizer. Synthetic fertilizers are generally less expensive than organic ones.
Quicker, more visual results. When you apply a synthetic fertilizer to a lawn you may see a greener and quicker growing lawn than would with an organic lawn. This would particularly apply if your soil is poor. Organic fertilizers are most effective when they are utilized as part of a overall program that enriches the soil over time.
Synthetic crabgrass and weed controls are generally much more effective and long lasting than organic alternatives.

CONS:
More Costly (InAggregate) Than Programs That Rely Upon Synthetic Materials. The cost of a bag of organic fertilizer will cost more on average than a synthetic one, however synthetic fertilizers have to be applied more often. Synthetic fertilizers are detrimental to the delicate balance to the soil needed to grow grass with strong natural defenses against insects and disease, necessitating use of fungicides and insecticides to protect the turf grass, and incurring the expense of applying them.
Health Concerns: When used properly many of the pesticides available today can be used with little to no harmful effects to the applicator or the property owner. Unfortunately, often these products are not applied properly according to the directions, at which point they do represent a possible health concern. Even when applied properly, overuse of these chemicals and the continued buildup of synthetic elements in our environment can have negative impacts on the environment and all living organisms dependent on that environment.

Lawn Care: To Be (organic) or Not To Be (organic)

Maintaining your lawn organically is not for everyone. This is true if you have a professional lawn care company or if you are maintaining the lawn yourself. If your desire is to have a blemish free lawn, totally free of weeds & crabgrass, with a deep dark green color consistently through the growing season, you may find yourself disappointed with the results. It is not that this can’t be achieved organically, it is just that it’s going to take several years to reach that goal. The reason for this is that growing a healthy vibrant lawn starts with building up the health of the soil. This is done by building up the biology of the soil, by stimulating the microorganisms that are essential to the nourishing of plant growth, accomplished by incorporating compost into the lawn, aerating it, measuring the PH of the soil, adding lime if needed, & applying organic fertilizer 2x/year.

The main reason I am a proponent of organic lawn care is for health-related issues. Organic lawn care enhances the safety & health not only of you, your family, your neighborhood, but that of our entire planet. A healthy soil teeming with microbes creates a healthy biosphere not only for the soil but for the plants growing in that soil as well. As the plants benefit from the rich nourishment provided by the soil they are able to build up their natural defenses against insects & disease, thereby minimizing the need for the use of pesticides.

The important question to ask yourself before embarking upon an organic approach to lawn care, how much is the tradeoff worth? Are some imperfections in the lawn acceptable, if in fact it is a healthier one, contributing to a healthier environment for your family, the natural habitat, & ultimately the planet?

With proper understanding of how grass grows the compromises to lawn perfection that an organic approach, at times during the season may require, can be minimized to the point whereby the difference between that of an organically maintained lawn & a traditional chemical-maintained lawn is fairly indistinguishable.

Organic Lawn Care: A Step by Step Process on how t Organic Lawn Care: A Step by Step Process on how to get started..

APRIL 1-15
STEP 1- Apply a fast acting lime. I recommend Bonide’s Turf Turbo.
STEP 2- Apply fertilizer- an organic fertilizer that contains corn gluten should be applied at this time. Corn gluten acts as both a fertilizer and as an all natural pre-emergent weed and crabgrass control. Apply at a rate of 1 lb/ 1000 sq ft, this is the rate at which the recommended spreader settings are listed on the product label.
STEP 3-Apply ¼” layer of compost to the lawn area.
STEP 4- Aerate the lawn.
STEP 5- Lightly incorporate the compost into the soil. Take a flexible rake, turn it over so that the tines are facing up rather than down and drag it along the lawn. This method will help incorporate the mulch into the lawn; Mother Nature will do the rest. It will take about two to three weeks for the compost to work its way in so that you don’t see it. Refrain from using the turf area as much as possible until the compost has worked its way in.
If you are contemplating seeding your lawn at this time:
Follow the steps listed above but substitute a corn gluten fertilizer with a non corn gluten organic fertilizer. Corn gluten will prevent your seed from germinating.
Fall is a much better time to seed. The challenges to spring seeding are many. Weeds will often germinate faster than the grass seed. Since you are unable to provide a crabgrass preventer until the new seed has matured to the point at which it has been mowed two times, you will face stiff competition from crabgrass as well. You will be very much at the mercy of the vagaries of Mother Nature at this time, until night time temps remain consistently in the 50’s and day temps in the 70’s your seed will not germinate. If the seed dries out at any time during the interval from the time that you sow to the time temperatures reach the necessary consistency you will get very minimal results.
Soil temperatures are consistently ideal for grass seed germination in the Fall, and crabgrass does not germinate at that time.

TIMELY TIPS AND TIDBITS FOR SPRING: Remembe TIMELY TIPS AND TIDBITS FOR SPRING:

Remember last summer when you had trouble with scale, aphids, whitefly, mealy bugs, spider mites and a host of other things like powdery mildew? And yet it was so hot, too HOT to do anything about it?

Consider using Bonide All Seasons Oil. It is a 3 in 1 (insecticide/miticide/fungicide) and very effective for protecting your fruit or shade trees, shrubs, ornamentals and vegetables. It comes in hand spray and hose end use.

This product can be used when the temp goes up to 85 degrees. Use early in the morning or late evening to avoid injuring bees. As with any such product, read the label for instructions. And ask our staff if you have any questions.
